Sometimes, you just got to rant.... 4.28.2003

Dammit man... after weeks of planning to do something neat with this site, I have come to the conclusion that you just got to rant and a site under construction isn't the place to do it. So, those of you who were expecting to see something cool here, you are going to have to wait.
So, I went to cancel my long distance service tonight. After months of thinking about it, I decided the time was right. My wife rolled up about $13 bucks in toll calls which in addition to the flat per month fee, taxes and charges brought my long distance phone bill to $20. So, by the time I have local service with a foreign exchange here in Frederick County because the phone system is so (cover your eyes kids and stop reading now) fucked up that neighbors on the same street often can't call each other without it being a toll call, I am spending anywhere from $35 to $45 a month total to keep the phones on. My basic local and regional service runs almost $30.
Anyway, I buzzed up MCI. The kind guy on the other end of the phone asked "can I help you?" I said, "yes, I want to cancel my long distance". He asks "can I ask why?" I say "sure, 1) Your basic service costs too much, 2) I have a cell phone to make long distance calls on, and 3) The webmiles service that was the reason I signed up with you in the first place is no longer in business." He says, ok but the tells me "you really need to call your local phone company to cancel because if I cancel you, and someone makes a long distance call, it will cost a fortune if you don't have a carrier." Meanwhile, I am thinking, this is the freaking reason I want to get rid of ALL PHONE SERVICES! If I cancel long distance, it should mean that long distance is dead on your phone. Apparently, that's not what it means. You have to put a long distance BLOCK on your phone by calling your local phone company... and that can take up to 72 hours to take place. Dear GOD! So, now if I remember, I will call and cancel long distance tomorrow.
